I've been 3 nights in Sveta Sofia Hotel. It is right in the middle of a pedestrian area - and we had a room at the front of the hotel which was very quiet. Bathroom was very clean - and room had 2 x beds, tv, fridge, desk and a couple of chairs. Would have benefitted from tea/coffee making facilities though.

Our tv wasn't working on the first night and we asked reception to come and fix it - they just gave us a different room! Breakfast was plentiful, orange juice was like squash, but apart from that - it was fine. Staff were friendly. There is a spa and we asked about that, however it was a bit of a 'do it yourself' place - the sauna wasn't switched on and there were no instructions so we didn't bother - which was a disappointment but not the end of the world.

We were met at the airport with no fuss, despite it being 11.30pm and the flight an hour and a half late. The hotel is clean and spacious and on a quiet pedestrianised street. We only had 2 nights there, but were very happy with it. We had missed supper, but the night staff made a real effort and managed to find a Pizza place still open and the pizza was delivered to our room very quickly.

The room was plain but clean, had comfortable beds, a good shower and though the hotel isn't particularly soundproof, we were not disturbed. The buffet breakfast, served in the basement, was plentiful and varied, and they didn't seem to mind us filling up our water bottles from the cooler for our day seeing the sights. The hotel was well situated, we thought. It was five minutes walk from the Women's Bazaar, which we loved, and only ten minutes walk to the Sveta Nedelya church. It's about 30 minutes from Alexander Nevsky, but there are lots of interesting places on the way.

We have just returned from a 2 night stay in the Sveta Sofia and were pleasantly surprised. The hotel is in an excellent location on a pedestrianised shopping street and only 10 mins walk to the top of Vitosha Street. We were able to walk everywhere to cover all the main sights - several times! Our standard double room was large, clean and the beds comfortable. The bathroom was clean and new though there was only a shower - no bath.

The decor was rather plain and the furniture on the basic side but we had everything we needed incuding a mini bar. We went prepared to find the breakfast inedible but it was fine. There was an average selection of hot and cold foods. It wasn't haute cuisine but it would not put us off using the hotel again. The staff were very pleasant and helpful and we made use of the sauna for just 20 leva. I would agree with other reviews that, compared with western european standards, the hotel rated more like a 3 star than a 4 star hotel, but it was a good 3 star hotel and certainly good value. Many of the central hotels in Sofia are much more expensive or very poor. I would certainly recommend the Sveta Sofia to others who are looking for a simple, good value hotel in a good location. We are considering returning with our 2 young children. |

Comment:
The Sveta Sofia is located in a pedestrian shopping street in downtown Sofia - very quiet in the evenings. The rooms are very spacious, comfortable and clean; staff are polite if rather inefficient. Breakfast was strange - they charged me extra for to top up my coffee but not for fried eggs and tomatoes. Go figure
