Sofia goes art on the weekend

The Sofia Echo, 04.04.2008

Two exhibitions with nothing in common are open for viewing as of April 4. Fake Simeone at Pistolet Gallery (48 Tsar Simeon Str) combines “the diverse work of four authors in a joint and incoherent visual-space approach to the issues of identity, essence and existence”, according to a media statement. Andreas Fishbach from Switzerland, Hektor Mamet from Switzerland/Poland, Silvia Sardellaro from Italy and Maria Gyukova from Bulgaria have created a show featuring site-specific installations, photography and paintings that deal with atomist theories, surrealistic corporal synthetics, skin as a state of being and symbologies of the doll. At Sofia City Art Gallery (1 Gourko Str), it is a retrospective exhibition of Ivan “Rembrandt” Georgiev. During his life (1938-1994), after having his paintings judged as trash when aiming to participate in an exhibition in 1966, the artist never participated in a showing of works nor sold any of his paintings. Georgiev’s paintings, of which nearly 200 will be exhibited for the first time, are knowns form their energy, regardless of the style. Pistolet is open Wednesdays to Fridays, 6pm to 9pm, and by appointment at 089/ 847 14 67; Fake Simeone is on until April 18 2008. Sofia City Art Gallery is open Tuesdays to Saturdays 10am to 7pm, and Sundays 11am to 6pm; the show dedicated to Ivan “Rembrandt” Georgiev is on until April 28 2008.
