A golden ring and a unique coin discovered in the historical town Veliko Turnovo

A golden ring with a pearl from 16th century and a unique coin dated back to the end of 17th century were discovered during the excavation works of the ancient Catholic church “The Assumption” in Veliko Turnovo, the cultural and historical centre of Bulgaria.
The first stage of excavations of the church has been finished. The church is believed to be a property of Dubrovnishki tradesmen. The excavations activities have lasted for two months. A Catholic church was situated on that place in the 16th century.
In fact, it is the first Catholic church in Bulgaria which has been a subject to archaeological works.
The golden ring and the unique of its kind coin are reported to have been minted during the reign of the first first Austro-Hungarian emperor from the Hapsburg dynasty. Archaeologists claimed that the coin is the only one of this kind in this region of Bulgaria.
Other valuable finds were discovered, for example, a silver stamp-ring with Armenian inscription.
More than 100 coins dated back to various time periods, from the reign of Ivan Shishman, Ottoman Yoke period, as well as European coins, were found during excavation works. All findings will be exhibited in the Regional History Museum.
