Antique stadium in Plovdiv to be restored in autumn

The charming Plovdiv city, Bulgaria’s second biggest city, will have the first underground antique museum.
The renovation of one of the most interesting archaeological places in Plovdiv , namely the Antique stadium of Philippopolis from 2d century, will be re-constructed in autumn. The most often visited landmark is situated in the centre of the city, but, unfortunately, it is not exposed properly. The main part of the antique stadium is the 6-metre long track for racing with chariots.
During the Roman epoch, when was the zenith of Philipopolis (2d-4th century), games in honour of the God Apollo and Alexander Makedonski, were held on that place.
The local administration of Plovdiv has won a project of the European economic space, estimated at nearly 900 000 EUR. The project includes the creation of an underground museum of Philippopolis after the archaeological research and conservation works are completed. As soon as the project is accomplished, Plovdiv city, will become even more important center of Bulgarian history and cultural tourism. There are several underground museums abroad, but the one to be built in Plovdiv , will be the first of its kind in Bulgaria.
