Borovets Live Report

Elly Stoyanova, 18.02.2005

Again on the road to Borovets. Happy to leave behind a grey chilly morning in Sofia we head for the Rila mountain. It takes about an hour to get to Borovets by car, the road is well maintained and cleaned from the snow. As you approach the Rila mountain you can see it in the distance right ahead of you. You can even see some of the ski-runs up there. The sight is magnificent – the mountain brightly lit by the morning sun seems to be drifting on a cloud of white mist hiding its skirts from our eyes.

As you get nearer this sight disappears as the road begins to wind through a pine-tree forest, the huge pines thickly covered with snow creating a fantastic fairy-tale atmosphere.

It’s about noon when we arrive in Borovets. Bright sun and thick dazzling snow – the weather’s perfect for skiing. First we take a walk through the resort to take some pictures. The streets are buzzing with people and the shops where you can find everything connected with winter tourism and ski wear are all open, the shop assistants busy with clients.

We make our way to the ski runs, which are full of people today. On the photo you can see one of the ski runs in front of the “Rila” hotel. The four Martinovi Baraki ski runs end in front of the “Rila” hotel. They have been broadened this year. Martinovi Baraki 2,3 and 4 are supplied with drag lifts and Martonovi Baraki 1 – with a Four-seat chair lift.

Four-seat chair lifts are very convenient as they are working really fast so you don’t have to wait long before your next run down the slope. A new four-seat chair lift has been built in Borovets – the Sitnjakovo lift, leading to Sitnyakovska skala and another one - the Yastrebets lift, going up the Yastrebets 2 slope. Yastrebets 2 is excellent for intermediate skiers and Yastrebets 3, which will be also reached by the new lift, is for professionals. So, if you are a professional skier looking for adventure, this run is for you.

On the picture you can see the Sitnyakovo four-seat chair lift. The building of this lift in the place of the old one-seat lift was a wise decision because now the ski runs in the Sitnyakovo region can be easily reached by more people. Thanks to the new lift these runs will become more popular and will add to the variety of ski runs in the resort.

And, of course, the Gondola lift Yastrebets. It’s the longest lift in the resort – almost 5 km to its upper station at the Yastrebets peak. All Yastrebets ski runs and the Markoudjik ski centre can be reached by the Gondola. That’s why it is preferred by a lot of skiers, especially the more experienced, who are looking for more difficult ski runs.

People of every age can find some sort of entertainment in Borovets. Since there are ski runs in the resort excellent for beginners, there are lots of children here learning to ski. Passing near one of the nursery slopes outside the “Rila” hotel we see many children having great fun there. Parents can leave them to the care of experienced ski instructors.

The variety of restaurants, bars and ski pubs in Borovets combined with reasonable prices and good service is amazing. Nightlife has always been popular here. We learn that there are more than 10 new night bars in the resort this year. So you have a wide choice of things to do in the evening – you simply can’t get bored.

There are also some improvements in the hotels this year. The rooms at the “Samokov” and the “Olymp” hotels have been recently renovated with modern furniture

The joinery of the windows at the “Rila” hotel has been changed for better noise isolation. Now you can rest in your room undisturbed by the noise outside the hotel.

The “Lion” hotel (ex-“Sokolets”) has been fully rebuilt. It’s a nice 3+ star hotel with two restaurants. Though it’s not situated at the centre of the resort it takes a few minutes to get to the ski runs on foot. If you don’t feel like walking you may take a bus which is free and arrives at intervals of 10-15 minutes.

With the “Lion” hotel our short visit to Borovets ends. Only a few hours here have made us forget about the daily routine. We are happy that we can share this wonderful experience and hope that you’ll feel a bit of the atmosphere of this sunny day in the mountain. And don’t forget – the slopes, the mountain and the pubs are all there waiting for you to come and immerse yourself into the colorful kaleidoscope of Borovets for an unforgettable holiday experience.
