Astonishing Sanctuary of a Persian God discovered in Bulgaria’s Rhodope Mountain

Anita Valentinova, source:bgfactor.org, 14.04.2010

The only one sanctuary of a Persian god Mitra in the Rhodope mountain was shown to the attention to the media. The unique sanctuary was discovered in 1915 by Bogdan Filov. It is located in the border area between Bulgaria and Greece. The sanctuary sank into oblivion and it was insignificantly popular in the written resources of Bulgaria’s archaeologist Bogdan Filov. It is believed that there is a big temple from the Late Antiquity just at the foot of the sanctuary; however, archaeological excavations have not been made there.

The sanctuary of God Mitra is just 6km away from the Greek border in the very beginning of the Greek village Thermes. The rock bas-relief is situated in the forest and it has never been seen before. Residents of Zlatograd have decided to clear the area due to their enthusiasm to reveal this archaeological masterpiece and ensure access of visitors to it. ‘This is the only sanctuary of Mitra which was found in Rhodopes. Having in mind that it shows the cult of the rock, we can see that the complex itself dates back from 3-4th century and therefore it represents earlier Thracians cults of rocks’, shared Prof.Nikolay Ovcharov. In III-IV century Mitra was the most honoured god in the Roman empire, later it was substituted with official religion, the Christianity, announced also Prof. Nikolai Ovcharov.
