Tourists Throng in Bulgaria’s Balchik Palace

A record number of 62 thousand tourists have visited the palace that once belonged to the Romanian queen Maria in the town of Balchik (Bulgaria's northern Black Sea coast) since the beginning of the summer. Tourists throng from Macedonia, Serbia, Romania, Russia, groups are expected to come from Switzerland. But the unique architecture, Balchik boasts the largest botanic garden on the Balkans, established by Tsar Ferdinand, grandfather of now outgoing Bulgaria's PM Simeon Saxcoburggotski. Earnings from tourism have increased by 17% compared to the same period last year, according to Trifon Dimitrov, acting director of Balchik cultural centre. Foreign tourists have been constantly inquiring about the weather, accommodation and prices, bookings are made for the autumn. The hit of this year's seasons are the Lilia cafe, decorated in total Oriental fashion and a wine shop offering selections of matured wines. In the beginning of season 2005 the Palace in Balchik has been renewed and reconstructed under the Beautiful Bulgaria project at the cost of 140.000 levs (1euro = 1.95 levs), the half of which were provided by the town. The facade of the main building, famous for its extravagant minaret, were the chambers of queen were, has been renovated.
