Bansko- History

Bansko is a top mountainous and ski resort, town-museum where the modernity and Antiquity intertwine to create a strong relationship between the man, nature and beauty. The modern sport centre that boasts many hotels and taverns slowly fades away and leads you to narrow cobbled streets where you will find impressive houses that feature Bulgaria’s Revival architectural style.

Nowadays Bansko is a unique blend of traditions and customs, as well as a contemporary style. It is amazing, isn’t it? Now you may wonder how this small town managed to become an attractive holiday venue and foremost choice for people who love to be close to nature.

Bansko was inhabited by ancient civilizations- Thracians, Romans, Byzantines who left their imprint on the cultural heritage of the settlement. Yet, Bansko has preserved its rich, authentic cultural and historical heritage, plenty of artifacts and glorious chronicle. The evidence for the ancient history are the remnants from the antique fortresses in the area Staroto Gradishte or ‘’Sitankale’’ which lies 4km southwest of Bansko. Archaeologists also found Thracian tombs there. If you are passionate about historical findings, you will be pleased to hear that there are fortresses in the picturesque locality Yulen. Southeast of Bansko we can also see that remains of the medieval one-apse churches ‘St.George’’ and ‘’St.Iliya’’. Even though there are many findings that date back to the Antiquity, it is considered that Bansko’s history from the Medieval epoch is the most interesting one.

Historical sources say that Bansko was the biggest and richest settlement where crafts and trade flourished in the middle of the 18th century. Today’s moder ski resort was established in 9-10th century after near neighborhoods were gathered together. The name of the most modernized ski resort in Bulgaria comes from the word ‘’ban’’ which means ruler. Perhaps it’s no wonder that Bansko is the ruler of the beautiful Pirin Mountain.

Many legends say that Bansko was established after the period of Ottoman invasion /15th-16th century/ as this is the first time when the resort was mentioned as a centralized settlement. As we have mentioned above, however, this cannot be true, since the settlement is a result of development throughout the centuries. Yet, the Ottoman Yoke has left its imprint on the lifestyle of Bulgarians and ruined many glorious cultural sites in the town. Bansko has become a cradle of Bulgarian spirit. The aspiration for innovations and aesthetics are the reason why Bansko became a centre of the economic and spiritual upsurge of the city in the end of 17th-18th century. This is the period when Bansko cemented its reputation as a centre of culture, trade and literature. Bansko is the birthplace of the founder of Bulgarian Revival, Paysii Hilendarski, the Patriarch of New Bulgarian education, Neophite Rilski and the world-famous poet Nikola Vaptsarov.

Another prominent figure that Bansko is proud of is the renowned icon-painter Toma Vishanov-Molera who is the creator of impressive murals in many churches in monasteries in Bulgaria. The artwork of Vishanov is associated with the establishment of Bansko icon-painting school.

Bansko, a town that has its ups and downs, is a hidden gem in Pirin Mountain, a proud heir of glorious past and a soldier for better future.
