Bulgaria Hosts WTO 75th Session

The 75th session of the Executive Council of the World Tourism Organization was inaugurated Monday in the Bulgaria's posh seaside resort Sunny Beach. Bulgaria is a country with a great potential for further development of all kinds of tourism during its four seasons, Prime Minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg said in his opening address at the WTO meeting. The prime minister underlined that his government has always seen the tourism development as a major priority in its tasks. Over the last four years the number of the foreign tourists in the country has gone up by nearly 50%, whereas the number of the tourists coming from the EU countries has increased by 90%, Saxe Coburg said. Culture and Tourism Minister Nina Chilova, who heads the Bulgarian delegation at the forum, pointed out that the dynamic development of the sea and ski tourism in Bulgaria has been only an impetus for the European Commission to describe Bulgaria as the new face of the global tourism market. She also cited data forecasting that by 2020 Bulgaria will have been visited by over 10 million tourists thus becoming one of the most perspective world destinations. The participants in the forum will focus mainly on administrative, financial and statutory matters. They will hear a report of the Secretary-General on the financial situation and plan of expenditure for 2005 and a report of the Committee on Budget and Finance They will also discuss the transformation of the Organization into a specialized agency of the United Nations. The election of a new Secretary-General is also on the agenda of the forum. Bulgaria has nominated deputy Culture and Tourism Minister Dimitar Hadzhinikolov for that post. see source
