One of the European countries which takes pride in having the biggest cultural heritage

Anita Valentinova, source: expert.bg, 29.03.2011

Bulgaria has cemented its reputation as a destination for mass tourism and seaside vacations. However, the ministry tries to change this image. This was pointed out by Ivo Marinov. He said that Bulgaria ranks second in Europe due to the wealth of more than 600 mineral springs. Thus, having in mind the demand of SPA and wellness tourism, Bulgaria can diversify its tourism product.

Bulgaria is one of the richest European countries in terms of cultural heritage which needs to offered as a tourism product. There are between 10 and 60 million Thracian mounds in Bulgaria and most of them have not been excavated yet. However, scientists constantly find new archaeological artefacts. Seven Bulgarian landmarks are recognized by UNESCO and included on the list of the world cultural treasure. There are more than 160 monasteries in Bulgaria. The country boasts over 40 000 cultural monuments. These are some of the reasons why Bulgaria has a potential to develop other forms of tourism as well- SPA and wellness, cultural, eco and rural, religious tours.

In order to avoid the typical disadvantages of mass tourism, holidaymakers can choose a diversified tourism product which is offered at competitive prices.
