Bulgaria shifts to health tourism

Pari Daily, Tanya Raycheva, 31.05.2004

BULGARIA is changing its tourism strategy towards health tourism. The largest travel agencies and tour operators are expected to shortly announce an entirely new product, which will replace the standard seaside holidays, following demand in the European Union, directors of Bulgarian tourist companies said. Surveys have shown that the number of people choosing health-oriented vacations will jump by 70% by 2010. Due to work pressure and stress more and more people now prefer holidays combining relaxation, fitness, recreation, spa tourism. Last year such holidays were chosen by 1.6 billion Europeans. Competition on this sector is constantly increasing and the new EU members have even introduced standards for such services. Statistical data show that potential candidates for this type of tourism are active people, 60% of them are aged 31 to 54. More often women choose health tourism. Such holidays are shorter - usually eight days - due to the business engagements of these tourists. see source
