Bulgaria turns to golf to make more profit from tourism

Anita Valentinova(this article includes materials from svejo.net), 26.02.2008

In a country, where golf was unknown sport game until a little while ago, playgrounds increase their number and the government consider ways to lure more tourists, is said in a comment for Bulgaria in .

Golf tourism is exceptionally important for attracting rich tourists, claims Kancho Stoychev, who hopes to open a new playground near to Balchik In June. In Mr.Stoychev’s opinion, If an ordinary tourist spends about 50-100€ per day, a golf maniac will spend 400-500€. Stoychev has an agreement with Garry Player, who is considered to be one of the best golf players of all time, on projecting his new playground. Player has declared in one of his interviews that golf is probably a way for beguiling rich businessmen, who later could decide to make some investments in the country, which now is one of the poorest in Europe. Stoychev thinks that Bulgaria probably will remain poor tourist destination without golf playgrounds, a destination without any real economical effect.

Bulgarian seaside and mountain resorts are well-known for a long time among tourists in West Europe, ex-socialistic states and Russia.

Foreign investors sensed Bulgaria’s golf potential, its mild climate and a wide variety of beautiful scenes of Bulgaria’s virgin nature. “When I took my first look at Bulgaria’s seaside, I understood, that it is created for a golf playground”, shares one of British investors, who builds an equipment nearby village Kableshkovo. “I remember what was like Costa del Sol in Spain, which is well-known now as Costa del Golf, 15 years ago. Now Bulgaria is that, what Spain was at that time.”, he also thinks. Now there are three opened playgrounds in the country and fifteen are in the process of building. Investors also pay attention to the need of some infrastructure improvements around made projects.

According to official data, more than 5 million tourists visited Bulgaria in 2007 and 16% of country’s GNP are a result of tourism. Svejo.net
