Bulgarian Machu Picchu uncovered

Anita Valentinova, source: moreto.net, 26.07.2010

The residence is located on the Kozi Gramadi mountain in the Sredna Gora mountain, close to the resort town of Hissar in central Bulgaria, at about 1 200 m above sea level. The archaeological site ‘Kozi Gramadi’’ is called Bulgarian Machu Picchu because of the similarities in the organization of the two ancient cities. According to beliefs of Incas and Thracians, the mountain is a sacred place. It is not only a shelter, but also a prime source of natural resources, as well as gods’ place. The Thracian residence is one of a kind in Southeastern Europe. Although the temple presents features of ancient Greek artwork, it is an example of exquisite Thracian architecture. It is considered that one of the most impressive parts of the archaeological finding is the excellent drainage system, because even now it is operative. Apart from the temple, archaeologists discovered the southeastern tower which is supposed to have reached a height of 6m.

It is believed that the residence ‘Kozi Gramadi’ was built in the period 383-354 B.C. The construction of the residence near Hissar is believed to have been started by the Thracian ruler Cotys I (384 BC - 359 BC) . The residence is mentioned in the writings of the Greek philosopher Demosten. According to Prof. Valeriya Fall, Kozi Gramadi is one of the last prosperous settlements of Thracian rulers.

An issue that is likely to arise in the near future is the complete renovation of the archaeological complex. Therefore, not only the municipality of Hissarya and the main sponsor of the excavations, ‘Moto Phoe’, should put efforts into the restoration, but also the support of the state are of great importance. Kozi Gramadi has the potential to become a part of an interesting tourist program, however, funds should be by EU projects. Archaeological excavations should have been finished by the end of the next week. The site will be preserved until the beginning of the next archaeological season.
