EBRD: Poor Infrastructure Stifles Balkan Tourism

Sofia News Agency, 09.11.2005

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) identifies excessive development and lack of infrastructure at the national and municipal level as the major weaknesses for the successful development of tourism in Bulgaria. According to Ilaria Benucci, Director Property and Tourism team at EBRD, this is a nagging problem is Romania, Croatia and Montenegro. Bulgaria is a booming tourism market, which is happening now, said Ilaria Benucci during a real estate and investment forum in Sofia. Among the most promising opportunities for the development of Bulgaria's tourism market is booming industry, a rising number of flights, increasing the weight of tourists from the EU, developing new and affordable destinations. EBRD forecasts a double-digit growth up to 2007 to remain solid afterwards. In an analysis of the opportunities and issues in the tourism sector in the Balkans, EBRD said Romania is mainly a local market, serving the national population. Security and difficulty in getting to nice and unspoilt beaches are the most acute issues in Albania. EBRD called for considerable investments from the private sector in the tourism market of Montenegro, which boasts beautiful and unspoilt seaside and resorts. see source
