German Tourists Swig Beer for 1 lev

Standart Daily, 13.06.2005

German tourists in Sunny Beach Black Sea resort drink beer at 1 lev the pint. The notoriously high prices in the resort are already history. English and German tourists have invaded the pubs in the centre of the complex. Most of them prefer white wine at 3 levs a glass. A grand party in Sunny Beach marked the kickoff of Summer Season 2005. Neptune personally received over a thousand guests at the party. The ocean god shook hands with statesmen, hotel-owners and restauranteurs. Donka Sokolova, chairperson of the Bulgarian Association of Travel Agencies and Nely Sandalska, head of Balkantourist were also among the guests. "We expect the number of tourists coming to Sunny Beach this year to rise by at least 20%," said Blagoy Ragin, chairman of the Bulgarian Hotels and Restaurants Association. The party, organized by the Union of Sunny Beach Private Owners, was hosted in the Chaika Beach Hotel. popular singers Doni and Neti, Georgi Hristov and Petia Buyoklieva were in charge of entertaining the guests. While the VIPs were celebrating the start of the season, the ordinary holidaymakers in the resort were pestered with the closed streets and noisy repair works. "This is hell! It is my first time here and I will never come to this resort again," said Inge (27) from Germany. Vendors, though, do their best to attract clients. The stands along the promenade offer a bottle of champagne or a bottle of Bulgarian whiskey gratis for every purchased pair of glasses. Tourists rent beach lounges at 6 levs. see source
