Girardelli Invests Millions in Bulgaria's Bansko

Bansko opened its 2006/07 winter season with a special ceremony on December 16. Popular Bulgarian singers Deo and Rushi Videnliev performed on a special stage in front of the Hotel Kempinski Grand Arena. At a news conference organised by Bansko mayor Alexander Kravarov, Bansko Skiing Season executive director Maya Hristoskova and the local tourism development committee, the hosts sent a message assuring tourists that there were no problems with water supply, electricity or infrastructure in spite of the high level of construction in the resort. A few hours later, the events moved to the Shiligarnika track where Alpine ski legend Mark Girardelli and Turin 2006 silver slalom medallist Reinfrid Herbs gave a demonstration run. In the days following the opening, 70 machines were set to produce artificial snow, which they are capable of doing if temperatures are below minus two degrees C. Website news.bg reported that Girardelli was to invest 20 million euro in a winter sports centre in Bansko. Kravarov said that a shareholders' association had been set up with Girardelli and with the participation of the municipality a few years ago. Girardelli had offered a three million leva buyout of the municipality's share, and this would be used for infrastructure in the resort, Kravarov said. Girardelli's plans date back two years. He intends to build a training centre for top skiers, and will also offer free training to children from Bansko. The sports centre will be next to the Hotel Strajite. The plan includes indoor and outdoor skating tracks, large-scale renovations to existing infrastructure, and a winter sports training centre. A key aim is to train Eastern European children to ski. Bansko municipality is to build a new sports hall with a capacity of 5000. There will also be a football field, a parking area, a store and a hotel. The hall will be at the entrance to Bansko from Razlog. In January 2007 Bansko will host the alpine skiing competitions for the European Cup. See source
