Anita Valentinova, source:econ.bg, 23.02.2009

It will be soon when Bulgaria will boast a city which can successfully compete with famous Venice. 3-km long water channel will be constructed in the centre of Kardjali in order to protect the city from floods. The Ministry of Regional Development is the investor of the unique of its kind project. This is one of the biggest constructions in the country which is financed by the national budget with nearly 77 million BGN. The vice-minister Mr. Mihalevski announced that the construction will be completely finished in three months. The unique construction is hydrotechnical facility which must protect the town of Kardjali from the waters of Arda river and for that purpose it will have unique location. The project will protect the city of Kardzhali from the waters of the river Arda and will create a lake with a permanent water level of 4 metres. Besides its protective function, the unique construction will be an attractive tourist landmark. A lake, long 3km, will be created in the town centre and boats will operate in it.
