Holidaymakers Try Wool-Teasing and Spindle-Weaving

Standart Daily, 28.08.2005

Once god-forlorn small villages near Pomorie perched on the lower slopes of Stara Planina (southeastern Bulgaria) have recently become all the rage among the foreign tourists who are vacationing at the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. As soon as they call it a day at the beach, they mount on buses and set off to one of these exotic places along the bumpy dirt roads. The authentic country life is unthinkable without peacefully grazing sheep, goats and donkeys. The animals are a real attraction and the guests enjoy themselves heartily. The village of Bata is one of the hit opportunities for rural tourism in Bulgaria. Every day at least 1000 tourists come to see it. Among the musts here are the pubs called Zlatna Buchva (the Golden Cask) and Planinska Kushta (Mountain House). Both places are designed in the traditional old Bulgarian rustic style - with wooden wells and painted horse carts. Old-fashioned leather footwear (opintsi) and homespun rugs decorate the walls. The prices are rather high, but the cooking is perfect.

In Zlatna Buchva a glass of Bulgarian rakia costs 3 levs (1 lev is 1.96 euro), imported brandy sells at 6 levs. Generous portions of sis kebap or kebapche (spicy grilled mincemeat) are available for 1.5- to 2 levs, while a pork steak, would cost 6 leva. Wine from the casks is galore for all, though, and is on the house. In the evening the pubs offer an interesting folk program with an orchestra and fire-dancers. Britons and Germans are eager to learn the Bulgarian dancers and join the ring-dance with zest. For most of the foreigners the favorite dish is a barbecued pork steak and of course the omnipresent Shopska salad. There are a distaff and a spindle on the premises and hardly any of the guests would miss a chance to try their skills. Another challenge for them is weaving on a horizontal domestic loom. The hosts are always willing to help.

In the neighboring village of Kozicheno, a small zoo set by the Nalbantovs family, Svetoslava and Ventsislav, is the lure for tourists. Their Ostriches named after members of the Bulgarian royal family (Simeon, Dona Margarita and Kalina) gather crowds. Anyone can enjoy the company of the friendly birds after paying a 2-leva admittance fee. The other inhabitants of the zoo are a monkey named Chiko and a kangaroo Dino. There's also a wonderful small restaurant to the zoo. The menu offers what not, but almost no one misses an omelet made of ostrich eggs. The hostess crosses her hear that one egg makes 15 omelets, at that cholesterol free. She also sells raw ostrich eggs. One egg costs about 25 euro. Apart from the two ostrich farms, the guests are usually taken to the local carding mill where they gladly learn to tease wool by hand. see sourc
