Hotels will charge Bulgarians and foreigners different prices

Sega Daily, 04.05.2005

'The tariffs that Bulgarians and foreigners are charged in hotels will not become the same in the next one to two years. This will not happen even after this country joins the European Union,' the chairman of the National Hotel Management Club, Ilian Ivanov, said yesterday. He said different prices were a problem not only in Bulgaria but also in all countries of the 'third world'. The same problem, for example, also exists in India. In spite of the fact that no ban exists in the EU, hotels there do not have different price lists. Hotel owners in Bulgaria have not yet reached a single stance on whether to make the prices the same. Large hotel chains and foreign operators have been protesting against the price discrimination for years because elsewhere in the world tariffs are not charged on a discriminatory basis. Ivanov said that equalising prices would benefit rich foreigners and cause losses to hotels in Bulgaria. The situation could change only when the standard of living of Bulgarians improved, he said.
