Melnik is the smallest and probably the most picturesque town in Bulgaria. It is one of the Hundred National Tourist Sites named by the Bulgarian Tourist Union.
Its historical roots lie as far back as the reign of the Thracian kings. After them come the Romans, Slavs, Turkish and Greek who leave their heritage here.
The Roman bridge, the old Turkish bath, the Despot Slav's stronghold from XIII-XIV century, together with the ruins of the churches, which once were as many as 75 witness for the rich history of the town.
