Bulgarian rock monasteries dated back to the earliest times in Europe

Anita Valentinova, source: okolosveta.com, 13.12.2008

Some of the rock monasteries, dated back to the earliest times in Europe are located on the riverside of Dry River, announced Mrs. Borisova, the Director of Dobrich Historical Museum. There are many remains of ancient cultures and civilizations in the canyon of Dry River, the biggest fresh water resource in this region in the past. The rock monasteries, inhabited during the 1st century A.D., are situated in natural caves, parts of which were subjects to complementary restoration and improvement.

Mrs. Borisova pointed out that they are mainly concentrated between the villages Balik and Onogur. Historians assume that the centre of the monk life on these lands was the monastery “Gqur Evleri”, which name means “Christian houses”. The complex includes a church and 9 monk rooms, having been carved into the rock, consisting of three floors, connected with each other. The cross, carved onto the altar table in the church is of great interest and also many graffiti at the foot of the rock massif, having been left possibly by monks and worshipers.

Several single monk rooms and a church-tomb, in which monks were buried, were located not far away from “Gqur Evleri”, in the so called Raklena cave.
