Eastern Europe's 'Most fashionable resorts'

talkbansko.6.forumer.com, 01.02.2005

UNITED States magazine NEWSWEEK added another chant to the choir of publications that have been praising the boom of Bulgarian tourist industry in recent months. Bulgaria boasts Eastern Europe’s most fashionable resorts, according to an article in Newsweek scheduled for publication on January 24. “Forget the Alps, Eastern Europe is booming with trendy ski spots-and at a quarter of the price you would pay for posh pistes in France or Switzerland,” the article said. “There has been a massive increase in the popularity in skiing in Eastern Europe,” the article quoted Chris Rand of the British-based tour operator Balkan Holidays as saying. “It is different, fun and easier on the wallet,” Rand said. According to Balkan Holidays statistics, 90 000 Northern European skiers are now hitting the Slavic slopes, four times more than just five years ago One hundred and fifty million euro has been invested in Borovets to make it a “modern European resort” with an additional 80 km of family-friendly runs. Afternoon apres-ski activities include all-terrain vehicle safaris and sunset tobogganing. For a more nature-orientated adventure, there’s Pamporovo, a snug mountain with good snowboarding, the NEWSWEEK article said. Ski resort operators said that the lower incidence of snowfalls was not harming resorts. There are currently many skiiers in Bansko, mainly foreigners from Serbia, Macedonia, Greece, Russia, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Denmark. Over the Festive Season and school holidays, the Ski Centre was visited by 5000 to 6000 people daily. Many Bulgarians visited at weekends. Skiing is also possible in another major resort, Pamporovo, in the Rhodope Mountains. The skiing conditions there are good despite the occasional bare patches on the ski runs, said the mountain rescue service. Pamporovo has snow machines but like those in Bansko, they run only in sub-zero temperatures and have therefore not been in use much this winter. With most of the hotels accommodating pre-paid holidays, the hotel occupancy rate in the resort is high at 70 per cent and the highest-rate hotels are almost fully booked, according to Georgi Georgiev of the Pamporovo 21 Century hotel association. For those who had hoped for more snow and better skiing conditions, the hotels offer alternative activities such as mountain hikes, swimming, spa facilities, wine and food tasting and others. British and Irish skiiers are traditional visitors to Pamporovo. Together with them, after January 15, the Pamporovo hotels were expecting groups of Turkish, Greek, Serb and Russian vacationers. see source
