Nuisance of ongoing resort construction

Dnevnik Daily, 07.03.2005

Large-scale property developments in Bulgaria's Black Sea resorts Slanchev Bryag and Zlatni Pyasatsi are still ongoing just three months ahead of the peak summer season, setting hoteliers and tour operator up for yet another year of complaints from foreign holiday-makers forced to spend their vacation in proximity to construction works. The first fallout has hit Slanchev Bryag, Bulgaria's biggest sea resort, which will lose business after Austrian tour operator Senioren Reisen decided to transfer the bookings of some 8,800 clients to the resort of Albena because ongoing construction work, Dnevnik learned from Kalin Sutev from BTS, the local representative of Senioren Reisen. Some of the owners of hotels in Slanchev Bryag said they did not mind losing business to Albena because that would save their resort longer-lasting bad publicity from possible complaints about the unabating construction activities. No less than 20 new facilities, both for accommodation and residential use, are in various stage of construction in Slanchev Bryag and some of them will not be finished before the big onrush of holiday-makers. The investment in the new resort facilities is roughly estimated at over 150 mln euro. The current bed capacity of the resort is 45,000 but is expected to increase with the launch of some new hotels. Some hotel owners, however, think that overcapacity is becoming an issue and that the attempts to lure clients with entertainment and gambling venues is taking away from the resort's appeal as a pure-play holiday destination. Another 10 hotels are under construction in the Zlatni Pyasatsi resort and many of them are off schedule due to the adverse weather conditions during the winter. Some 6,000 foreign tourists with bookings for resorts along Bulgaria's Northern Black Sea coast are expected to arrive in March and April, Dnevnik learned from Varna airport officials. Last year, the tour operators warned incoming vacationers about the problem with the ongoing construction works but that did not prevent a flood of complaints and transfers to hotels further away from the noise and pollution. see source
