“Orpheus mysteries” Festival in Trigrad

Trigrad is once again the official host of the “Orpheus mysteries” Festival. Residents and guests of Rhodopes mountain will be enchanted with the magical rites which used to be done at these lands. Traditionally the mysteries take place during the last weekend of July, however, the unpleasant weather is likely to change the weather. The event will be opened with a traditional singing custom from Trigrad and celebrations in the centre of the village on 24th of July, Saturday. At sunset all guests and residents of the village will be able to observe the unique fire custom and at sunrise they will meet the sun at Rhodopes Mountain. It is expected that the festival will continue with a procession to the cave ‘Devil’s throat’. It is said that the village of Trigrad was an ancient Thracian settlement. The area has become popular for its abundance of herbs and interesting ancient legends.
Local legend says that when Orpheus began to play, the wind faded away between the trees, as if listening to his music, birds stopped flying for a while and the animals discontinued their adventures in the forest paths just to listen Orpheus’ songs. When maenads tore the singer into pieces and threw him into the river, every drop of his blood turned into a beautiful mountain flower called silivryak, Haberlea rhodopensis in Latin, or better known as the flower of Orpheus. Silivryak is a rare relict plant on the Balkans and it has the unique qualities of the ambrosia. While traveling throughout the region of Rhodopes mountain, you will have the chance to enjoy its gentle colours at all mountain meadows. “The attendants this year will become part of a sacrament and a game, which had an important role in the believes and hopes of our ancestors”, announced the organizers of the event.
