The number of golf tourists who visit Bulgaria may reach 500 000 annually. This is the prognosis of the president of the International Association of golf journalists. During the presentation of the golf destination Kaliakra, which boasts Light house Golf Resort, Black Sea Rama and Thracian Cliff Golf resort, he stated that Bulgaria has great potential to develop golf tourism.

Last year the number of foreign golf fans who visited Bulgaria did not exceed 100-200, however, this year more than thousand players are expected. Therefore, the prognosis of 500 000 golf tourists per year is realistic, commented Boris Borisov, the owner of Bulgarian golf tours. Tour operators and individual groups have showed their interest in Bulgaria as a golf destination and hence tourists from UK, Sweden, Spain etc. are expected to visit Bulgaria’s newly constructed golf courses. Predominantly British golf players, Swedish, Norwegian are interested in golf opportunities which Bulgaria offers.

The results of the last tourism expo in Malaga show that although golf tourism needs to be developed in Bulgaria, the interest has increased significantly over the last couple of years. The main reason is that Bulgaria has potential to compete Turkey which has proved itself is golf destination for European residents. Currently the price for one-week package in Bulgaria is 30% lower than the one which Turkey offers. In addition to that, three golf courses in Bulgaria boast the type ‘signature’ which means that they provide high standard and state-of-the-art facilities. Yet, two brand new golf courses should have been constructed by the end of the year and obviously Bulgaria has potential to cement its reputation as an evolving golf destination. In comparison to Bulgaria’s prestigious golf courses, Turkey has only 2 out of 11 golf playgrounds which may bear the ‘signature’ category.
