Over 30 000 people visited the cave “Dqvolsko Gurlo” this year

Anita Valentinova, source: okolosveta.com, 13.12.2008

Over 30 000 people have visited Bulgarian cave Dqvolsko Gurlo this year, reported Kostadin Hadjiyski, one of the people responsible for the cave. He explained that the cave is accessible and it can be reached by using artificially made tunnel with the length of 150m. After passing this tunnel, you can enter into the biggest hall “Bulgaria”, provided with all utilities. Its height is 36m, the length is 110m and it is also known as “Rumbling Hall”. The most beautiful thing in the cave is 60m waterfall which is the biggest underground waterfall on the Balkan Peninsula. Moreover, you can see the fantastic cascade, formed of smaller waterfalls. Visitors can see the waterfall after ascending a staircase of 30 stairs. According to Hadjiyski, Thracians threw their dead leaders in the cave. The original entrance of the cave looks like opened mouth. The artificial tunnel was dug in 1972 and in this way the cave Dqvolsko Gurlo became accessible for tourists. The interest in the natural phenomenon of both Bulgarians and foreign tourist groups has increased. Most foreign groups are from Israel, England and France. Research will continue in the cave in 2009 as well, Hajiyski also added. The cave is called by local people with the metaphor “Underground Kingdom of Hades”. There are seven caves in the region of Trigrad Gorge which exist 4 000 years B.C. It is also proved that people lived in these caves, as relics of cave people were discovered in one of them, Haramijska cave. Mr. Hadjiyski made the conclusion that this year was successful one for speleologists in Smolyan area.
