Pamporovo eyed by 40 developers

Dnevnik am The news@8, 13.12.2004

The municipalities of Smolyan and Chepelare have received over 40 requests from developers for the construction on the site of the Pamporovo resort of new hotels, eateries, entertainment establishments and residential buildings, Dnevnik learned from the mayors of the two municipalities. The bed capacity of the resort should increase from 6,000 to 18,000, Georgi Georgiev, chairman of the Pamporovo 21 association of resort property owners, said at the official opening of the 2005/2005 winter holiday season which took place this weekend. Just two years ago, land plots in the resort used to sell at 6-12 euro/sq m but now the going rate is 130-140 euro/sq m as investors get excited by the plans of the two municipalities, whose territories are straddled by the resort, to build new runs and ski facilities in the vicinity of Chepelare and Smolyan that will be connected with the resort. Five kilometres have been added to the length of the resort's ski runs for the new season. Six snow machines have been installed to service ski runs with a combined length of 2,130 m in the area of the Studenets village. The one-seat ski lift servicing the Studenets area has been replaced with a four-seat lift by Austrian manufacturer Doppelmayr which can handle 2,000 skiers an hour. Another 8 hotels are expected to be completed for the 2005/2006 winter season, bringing the resort's investment tally to 50 mln levs, Georgiev said. see source
