Nearly 200 000-250 000 people have visited the archaeological site Perperikon over the past 2 years. The renowned archaeologist Prof. Nikolay Ovcharov said at a press conference that Tsarevets hill is the most visited place followed by Perperikon. Ovcharov added that the infrastructure near Perperikon needs to be developed in order to ensure proper access to the interesting archaeological spot. According to him, Kozi Gramadi is hardly accessible landmark and it takes up to 4 hours to reach the site. Excavations have been continued after the financing for the amount of 90 000 EUR. Archaeologists are positive about the development of the landmark as they will ensure the connection between the Castle and the Acropolis of Perperikon. It is expected that this year a quarter of the acropolis will be thoroughly researched.
Perperikon is a landmark of great significance, because it is the biggest settlement in the Rhodopes and one of the biggest medieval cities on the Balkan Peninsula. Perperikon boasts a glorious history of 6500-7000 years-from the stone and copper epoch to the Middle Ages. The pre-historic sanctuary from the Bronze epoch comprised an area of 12km2. The rock is the centre of the tower and many sanctuaries stretch out nearby. They used to function in the past and they formed a huge conglomerate of such sanctuaries, said Prof.Ovcharov.
