Hotel Bulgaria is superbly placed, within easy walking distance of the main shopping and dining areas of the new town and the tourist sights of the old town. It's tricky to locate by car - especially if you're coming from the South of the city - as it's in a pedestrianised area, and it has very few dedicated car spaces. There is a secure car park a short drive away but this is closed from 17:30 to 08:30. From the outside the hotel looks attractive and modern, but this is deceptive. We had booked a standard room and this was tiny, dark and in desparate need of refurbishment. To be fair, it contained all essential facilities but we found it very depressing. The shower was in a wet room which would have been fine except that a toilet and wash basin had been squeezed into the same limited space. After one night we asked for an upgrade and moved to a luxury room which was very spacious and comfortable, with a good sized bathroom including bath and shower - although it was similarly in urgent need of refurbishment. The towels in both rooms must have seen 20 years service and the pillows were a strange shade of yellow (although the pillow cases and bed linen were fine). Breakfast was served in a gloomy basement, and although there was a perfectly adequate cold buffet provided, it was only replenished very slowly - so if you are not an early riser it's a matter of luck what there is available when you arrive. The butter was consistently rancid on each of the four mornings we were there. The reception staff were excellent, with a very high standard of English and always smiling and willing to help and explain. Overall, with the convenience of the hotel's location, we would give a qualified recommendation - but only based on having a 'luxury' room.

Hotel Bulgaria, 13 Patriarh Evtimiy, (Also called Best Western Hotel Bulgaria on hotels.com but NOT Royal Hotel Bulgaria which is in a different location) was perfect for what I needed. I had a very clean, simple room that was small but had lots of lamps and a comfy bed, good blankets. My bus arrived several hours early and I was allowed an early check in when I arrived. The included breakfast was big with scrambled eggs, meat, sweet breads, fruit, cereal. The location was perfect -only a 10 minute walk to the Old Town and was along a pedestrian walkway with shops and several restaurants to choose from. It's only a block to the Tourist Information office. The only problem I had was that my bathroom light kept going out. The technician and front desk were helpful and timely in getting it fixed.

hotel bulgaria is perfectly located in the pedestrian zone of plovdiv, around 10mins. walk to the old town and 5mins. to the train station. the hall is very imposing, much more than the rest of the hotel, although rather tasteless with incoherent furniture and decoration. my (standard) room was extremely small (actually a single size) and with a micro-bathroom where shower has no curtain and is located in the middle of it, so basically whenever using it you inundate everything... the breakfast buffet located in an underground room (without elevator: elderly and handicapped persons beware!) is good and varied, although the somnolent waitresses think more about chatting than to replenish the empty trays. reception staff are young, basically kind but little experienced.

The hotel is dead center which means that you do need to keep your windows closed for it to be quiet but that doesn't matter as there is enough heat/cold to regulate the room.
The view is good enough, the the rooms were clean but kind of small and did require refurbishment; I found the bed quite uncomfortable.
The breakfast was great with mostly everything, from fruits and cereal to boiled eggs ham and cheese.
The staff did not know a lot of English but enough to communicate.
I enjoyed my stay at this hotel, but was not impressed in any particular way.

The Bulgaria Hotel in Plovdiv is in a great location. The staff is friendly and the rooms are neat and clean. The front doors open onto a pedestriain only thoroughfare, making everything within easy walking distance. Do not forget to ask about the Italian restaurant across the blvd. behind the hotel. The coffee there is outstanding!!
