Images of St.Ivan Rilski and Joan Bogoslov were found in the rock monastery near Vratsa. The unique rock monastery “St.Pusti” near Vratsa town will be renovated with funds, allocated by Bulgarian Ministry of finance.A research showed that the monastery is treated with great respect, because of four historical layers which were defined in it. One of them proved the point that the holy place was founded near the remnants of Thracian sanctuary and Thracians paid tribute to it, because one of its niches was honoured as a symbol of Thracian Goddess of Fertility. The rock monastery area itself is hardly accessible and it is very likely that St. Ivan Rilski was there for a short time, giving the name of the monastery. Images of St. Ivan Rilski and Joan Bogoslov were found in the monastery and they are of great significance for the monastery’s sacred treasure. Important evidence was found that the monastery was the shelter of the first printing workshop in Bulgaria in 1822.
A work group will be formed and restoration work is planned to begin in the middle of May. The renovation works include the construction of a road between the monastery and the nearby village Bistrets in order to improve the infrastructure in the area.
