Sofia a tourist destination

Sofia Echo Com, 04.03.2005

A strategy on Sofia’s development as a tourist destination was handed to Sofia Mayor Stefan Sofianski by Sofia Tourism Board chairman Rumen Draganov on February 24. The handover happened on the second day of the international tourist fair Vakantsia 2005 (Holiday 2005), which was taking place at the National Palace of Culture (NDK). The strategy lists measures for conservation of the capital’s natural, cultural and historical landmarks, development of the convention industry, and work on Sofia’s bid to host the 2014 Winter Olympic Games. According to the strategy, financing will come from the proceeds from visitor fees, the budgets of the ministries of economy, sports and youth, regional development and public works, and culture and tourism. The Borissova Garden will undergo overall landscaping as a tourist sight of national importance at the cost of 550 000 leva. Fifteen thousand leva is allocated for installation of a TV camera and live weather broadcasts. Another 250 000 leva is earmarked for establishment of a tourist information centre with four representative offices. The domes of the Sveta Nedelya Cathedral, the Sofia Synagogue and the Banya Bashi Mosque are to be gilded. A museum of totalitarian art is to be established. Two skateboard parks and one snowboard park on Vitosha Mountain will be built as well. Sofiyanski said that the strategy measures are in line with the city’s general plan and with the Sofia Municipality strategy for the capital city’s development during the period ending 2020. Preserving and showing the cultural heritage of Bulgaria as a way of attracting foreign tourists is also among the priorities of the newly appointed Minister of Culture and Tourism Nina Chilova. The drafting of a long-term strategy for the endorsement and preservation of Bulgaria’s cultural identity is among the priorities of the new team at the ministry, Chilova said in a Darik Radio interview on February 26. To this end Chilova expects to pool the efforts of good specialists and managers from intellectual circles, as well as financiers. She added she would work to find additional sources of financing, which is one of the main objectives of uniting tourism and culture in one ministry. Currently there are 19 projects under the EU’s PHARE programme for 4 760 000 euro to which 19 municipalities in Bulgaria have applied. The projects are aimed at the creation of a cultural and historical product, as well as to the construction and restoration of monasteries and churches, as well as the surrounding infrastructure, Chilova said. see source
