Relics of St.John the Baptist will be given to the Sliven bishop who will decide where they will be exhibited for worshippers. Most probably the relics will remain in the Sozopol temple ‘St.George’.
Kazimir Popkonstantinov, the leader of the excavations work, explained that the reliquary is made of alabaster, not marble as archaeologists have supposed in advance. Such a specimen is found at Bulgaria’s Black Sea for the first time. It is closely related to sarcophaguses from the Antiquity. Along with the relics, archaeologists discovered a stone box in which relics have been preserved in the reliquary. The box carries an inscription in Greek language and this clearly indicates who had brought the precious finding.
Mr.Dimitrov commented that Sozopol has a great potential to become Jerusalem 2. Currently, the church ‘St.George’ in Sozopol houses a particle of the Holy Cross and the relics of St.Andrew. ‘These are Orthodox relics of prime importance. Sozopol, being a lovely seaside resort, has a great potential to develop religious tourism as well. This will boost the local economy and accomplish Bulgaria’s tourist product.’’, added Mr.Dimitrov.
