Summer Season in Bulgaria to Continue Undisturbed

The Sofia Echo, 07.07.2006

Bulgaria’s southern coastal resorts were getting back to normal after the serious downpours and floods from July 1 and 2. Water has been pumped out of all hotels, municipal and private construction, local administrators said. By the end of the week mayors needed to list all damages to receive funding, Dnevnik newspaper reported. Nessebar mayor Nikolai Trifonov sent letters to diplomats from all countries, whose citizens spend their summer vacations in Bulgaria. The letters said that flood damages have been dealt with and tourism conditions were once again good. Disaster Management Minister Emel Etem visited all affected resorts in the beginning of the week. Municipal representatives told her damages were not serious enough to affect negatively the summer season. Ecologists warned that rapid construction in the coastal region and the lack of developed drainage systems could produce serious damage in case the downpours were repeated. Only one water purifying station functions for the entire southern coastal area, Dnevnik reported. Last year the Nessebar-Sunny Beach-Ravda purifying station started functioning. It, however, cannot meet the demand resulting from the intense hotel and vacation village construction. see source
