The largest natural lake in Bulgaria, Lake Vaya, Bourgas area, has already become preserved zone and it will be under the protection of the Law for biological diversity.

It is to be restored and the localities of rare protected pink pelican’s species, small cormorants, curly-headed pelicans and many others are to be preserved. The total area of Vaya Lake is about 28 km2 and its depth reaches 13m. Via Pontica, one of the biggest “air roads” of migrating birds from the whole Europe, passes above the lake. 254 water birds species, 61 of which are included in Bulgarian Red book, build their nests in the lake. Many of them are rare for Europe and 9 of them are rare worldwide. According to Ramsar Convention of Wetlands, Lake Vaya was declared for ornithological important place of international significance in 2003. If this humid zone of the lake disappears, the birds which fly on the Black Sea coast will not have a place where to stop and find food during the important period of migration. Some people from northern European countries feel that it is the mission of their life to see the preserved species in Bulgarian lake. International youth groups build platforms for pelican nests and hideouts for birds’ observation.
