The Bulgarian Orthodox Church commemorates the memory of the Holy brothers Cyril
BNR, 11.05.2009
The Bulgarian Orthodox Church commemorates today the memory of the Holy brothers Cyril and Methodius, who in the 9th century created the Slav alphabet. They were canonized in the early Medieval period for their contribution for the popularization of Christianity among the Slavs and for the translation of clerical books from the Greek language. St. St Cyril and Methodius were declared by Pope Joan Paul II for co-patrons of Europe together with St. Benedict. On May 11th 1851, when Bulgaria was still under Turkish domination, the Bulgarian school in the city of Plovdiv organized the first celebration, dedicated to St. St Cyril and Methodius. The initiative of the teachers from Plovdiv was taken up by other cities and towns in the 60s of the 19th century.
