It is expected that this summer excavation works of the South Fortress wall in the medieval Drustur will be completed, announced the chairman of the Regional History Museum in Silistra. Archaeologists hope to discover the second pentagon tower of the big city’s gate. The explorers came across the remains of the gate two years ago. “Active researches are scheduled to start in the beginning of August as at the moment the site is undergoing initial preparation. The South Fortress wall is a monument within the borders of the National Archaeological reserve “Dorostorum-Drustur-Silistra” which is situated in the center of Silistra town and it stretches from the Danube Garden to the entrance of the Kuklen Theatre (“Dolls’ theatre”). The central gate of the medieval Drustur was discovered two years ago during excavations because of the construction of a building. The fortification is unique of its kind as it resembles the one in Palestina. All discoveries made during the excavation works of the previous phase will be preserved in order to shape the overall appearance of the historical landmark.
