The project ‘Assenovgrad- the sacred gate of Rhodope Mountain’ was approved and therefore it will be financed under the operational program ‘Regional Development’. The project is estimated at 3 231 995 BGN. It is planned that the infrastructure of the cultural monument Assenova fortress will be developed. This includes the reconstruction of the road the leads to the fortress, the expansion of the existing parking lot and the construction of a big information centre. Certainly, the authenticity of the fortress and the church will be preserved. The project envisages the construction of a hall in the crypt of the church which will serve as a cultural and information centre for events that are closely related to the culture, religion and the presentations of the cultural monument ‘Assenova fortress’. The latter is a cultural monument of national importance.
The medieval Assenova fortress lies 3km south of Assenovgrad and it is located at a rocky hill above the north bank of Asenitsa river. During the medieval period the fortress undergone several construction periods as the most important one dates back to 17th century and it is a deed of the king Ivan Assen II. The most impressive landmark of the fortress that remained preserved is the one-apse church ‘St.Virgin Mary’. It has two floors, a wide narthex above which there is a huge tower. The architectural exquisiteness, the decorative ornaments on the southern facade, as well as the unique mural paintings/14th century/ , make the temple one of the finest examples of Bulgarian medieval art.
