Bulgarian archaeologists discovered the relics St. John the Baptist during excavations at St. Ivan island near Bulgaria’s seaside resort of Sozopol.
The team of archaeologists uncovered a reliquary on the 28th of July 2010 and they presumed that the artifacts preserved may include the important relics. Of course, the finding was a sensation, so archaeologists and historians have been working on the case in order to find out whether indeed they had discovered relics of St.John the Baptist. The reliquary, uncovered during the excavations at the paradise island St.Ivan, was opened in the History museum of Sozopol and was examined by a team of experts. The reliquary was put on display on August 1st in Sozopol's history museum, however, access is allowed under extraordinary security measures.
Sliven bishop consecrated the excavations at St.Ivan Island near Sozopoland blessed the researches in 2008. The team of archaeologists under the leadership of Kazimir Popkonstantinov and an archaeologist Tsonia Drazheva found the remains. Subsequently experts have confirmed that the relics belong to St.John the Baptist. The reliquary contained finger bones, part of a heel, a jaw, a tooth and a few small bones. A small box was discovered inside the reliquary. An anthropological analysis will be also made.
