The “Second Perperikon” discovered in Northern Bulgaria

Anita Valentinova, source : infotourism.net, 02.07.2009

Unique Thracian sanctuary was discovered by speleologists in Northern Bulgaria. The team of speleologists from the club “Dervent” (Veliko Turnovo) was led by Evgeni Kolev. The speleologists came across the object a couple of days ago while they were working on the formations along the river valley of the Danube. The shrine is comprised of a main cave similar to the one near Kardzhali, mounds, alcoves and a rite altar. There are stunning human figures carved into the rocks and it is really impressive that they look like in a different way, depending on the sunlight. Actually the Thracian shrine is made of several distinct rocks and mounds divided by obstacles. The complex is preserved in an excellent condition. Fortunately, it is located in a hardly accessible place and for that reason it has remained untouched till the present day. Mr. Koev expressed his assumption that the sanctuary might have been built by the population who moved after the fall of the Balkans under Roman power, or, for instance, Thracians from the upper Arda who settled in the region of the Danube valley. There are several conical rock alcoves in the shrine, but their origin is still not identified. Two Thracian mounds, as well as a well outlined cave, have been discovered in one place. Speleologists took photos and after their careful examination, it has occurred, surprisingly, that there are 4-m tall human figures (three in number) on the surface of the rock. One can easily recognize figures only if sufficient lighting is provided. Speleologists believe that they will discover Thracian tombs inside the cave. The unique shrine may become soon a place, unique not only for Northern Bulgaria, but the whole country.
