Veliko Tarnovo Boasts Permanent 2nd Bulgarian Kingdom Exhibit
Sofia News Agency, 04.10.2009
A permanent exhibit dedicated to the finds discovered in the “Saints Peter and Pavel” monastery will open doors in the Bulgarian city of Veliko Tarnovo. The information was reported Sunday by prominent Bulgarian archeologist, Professor Nikolay Ovcharov, who said the exhibit will be officially launched on October 19 and will display the glory of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. About 100 burials of Veliko Tarnovo noble and wealthy people have been discovered near the church. They date from the 14th to the 18th century. The archeologists discovered over 100 precious gold and silver objects in the burial sites. Professor Ovcharov also showed Sunday several finds from other locations such as Perperikon, including two silver buckles and a partial bronze cross with bone particles inside the material. The Professor said that it was not possible to tell if the cross is really part of the Holly Cross, but added these were important Christian artifacts that must be taken into account. The cross dates from the 10th-11th century and has the image of Jesus on one side and the one of the Virgin Mary on the other. “The finds demonstrate yet once again the significance of Perperikon and the Perperikon episcopate during the Middle Ages as a center of Christianity,” Ovcharov said.
