World tourism day celebrated with various events

Anita Valentinova, 27.09.2010

World tourism day, 27th of September, has been celebrated for over three decades. Every year the day, being celebrated by all travellers worldwide, focuses on various opportunities and challenges in terms of tourism development all over the globe.

This year the United Nations World Tourism Organization defined the slogan for the festivity ‘Tourism and Biodiversity’ and EU put the accent on ‘The role of cultural heritage in the new European tourism policy’’. Yesterday many museums in Bulgaria did not charge entrance fees.

Photo adventures, unforgettable memories, lovely places are all presented at an impressive photo exhibition ‘’Bulgaria – an attractive tourism destination’’. The exhibition opens today at 6pm. The venue is terminal 2 at Sofia airport, one of the busiest entrance gates in Bulgaria. All participants in the competition depicted their impressions, as well as Bulgaria’s most beautiful natural, cultural, historic and folklore landmarks. One can touch Bulgaria’s beauty and feel the magic of the authentic atmosphere and lifestyle. Since 1980, the United Nations World Tourism Organization has celebrated World Tourism Day on September 27. This date was chosen as on that day in 1970, the Statutes of the UNWTO were adopted. The adoption of these Statutes is considered a milestone in global tourism. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness on the role of tourism within the international community and to demonstrate how it affects social, cultural, political and economic values worldwide.
