 The picturesque town of Nessebar (population 9437 inhabitants), one of the oldest European towns is situated on a small peninsula, 37 km north-east of Bourgas and 429 km east of Sofia. The beach is considered to be the best along the Black Sea coast.
Today Nessebar is one of the resorts most preferred by tourists.
The old town of Nessebar is under the protection of UNESCO. The old building were restored and new houses in ancient style were built.

Locatie: De stad Nessebar is een van de oudste steden in Europa. Het is de opvolger van de oude Thracische nederzetting genoemd Mesambria en gesticht in de 2de eeuw na Christus. De oude naam betekent stad van Melsa. Sinds het jaar 510 werd de stad een Griekse kolonie door Doriaanse kolonisten gesticht. Ze noemden het Mesambria. Het had een theater en een tempel van de Griekse god Apollo. Messing en zilver munten werden geslagen en in de 3de eeuw - gouden Ones. Het was bezet en ingenomen in 72 na Christus door een Romeinse garnizoen. De stad begon weer een belangrijke rol spelen in 3-4de eeuw. In het jaar 812 veroverde Khan Krum de stad. In 864 Boris I liet het beheer van de stad aan Byzantijnen over, maar koning Simeon vroeg het opnieuw terug. Sinds XI eeuw de Slavische naam Messebar of Nessebar is gebruikt samen met de oorspronkelijke naam Mesambria. |
