An exploring expedition in search for Odrisi capitals

Anita Valentinova, source : news.travel.bg, 06.04.2009

The valley of roses and Thracian kings will be explored in depth by an international archaeological expedition so that the Thracian city, the successor of the ancient Sevtopolis, to be found. The city of the king Sevt was established in 323B.C. and then demolished in 270 B.C., most probably because of the invasion of the Celts. Archaeological excavations from 60 years ago showed that the city consisted of one well-maintained settlement, encircled by 890 m long fortress wall and several suburbs. Sevt built his capital in accordance with the plans of ancient Greek polices, two wide main streets begin from the city gates and they were cut across by an angle of 90 degrees, forming a huge square with the sanctuary of Dionissii. 50 Odrisi aristocracy families have lived in Sevtopolis. In the yard of the Sevt residence, an inscription in Greek language carved by two stone blocks has been found. In fact, this ancient inscription helped archaeologists to identify the city as the one of Sevt. The main goal of the scientific expedition is to find and describe the ancient monuments in the immediate vicinity of the Odrisi capital Sevtopolis. The expedition group consists of 20 experts in the archaeology field. The expedition has finished the research on the antique fortress in the mouth of Gujrlq River. The expedition is following modern methodology of European quality for the whole research process.
