Apocalyptica to open summer tourist season in Kavarna
The Sofia Echo, 09.03.2008
Finnish rock band Apocalyptica, renowned for their fusion of classical and metal music played on cellos, will open the summer tourist season in Kavarna, on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast on May 31.
The concert will be free of charge and held in the town's marketplace, the town hall said on March 6, as quoted by Bulgarian news agency (BTA). Apocalyptica will return to Kavarna, which is firmly entrenched as the Mecca of heavy rock music in Bulgaria, having previously played there on June 1 2006.
It would be Apocalyptica's third visit to the country, the first one being in June 1999, when the band's was still a fresh surprise on the music scene following their first album, which featured only covers of Metallica songs. Since then, the trio has dramatically expanded its collection of songs with original pieces to carve their own niche on the mainstream rock scene.
Described sometimes as owing as much to Mozart as to Metallica, the band mixes the careful arrangement of chamber music with the aggresiveness of heavy metal to produce a unique experience, while its live performances will doubtlessly please even the most seasoned headbanger.
Apocalyptica's gig in Kavarna will kick off the third leg of its tour to promote last year's album, When Worlds Collide, which will take the band to more than a dozen summer music festivals across Europe.
