Archaeologists discovered Roman settlement near Varna

Anita Valentinova, source :news.bg, 13.07.2009

Roman settlement was discovered in the region Mentesheto near Varna, announced from the Regional History Museum in Varna. Excavations have been conducted by the archaeologists Alexander Minchev and Teodor Rokov. They have investigated the stone structure which resembled a dolmen, a typical Thracian tomb dated back to the early Bronze epoch. The research shows that the dolmen was created nearly 2000 years ago with stone tables taken out from the existing nearby big water reservoir. The excavations proved the point that the stone blocks at the surface are new. However, in-depth excavations brought to light three main periods of that place.

The earliest evidence for human presence dated back to the Roman period 2d-3th century. Archaeologists relate the stone pavement to that time as it is likely to be a part of a huge building or Roman villa, devastated in the middle of the 3d century during the invasion of Goths. The foundations of another building (3d-4th centuries) have been discovered 20cm above the pavement. Archaeologists discovered also proof of an early Bulgarian settlement existed in the 4th-5th century. A fireplace and ceramics featuring typical ornaments were found there. It is believed that the area was inhabited in the 18th-19th century as ceramic fragments, dating back to that period were excavated.
