The Bulgarian seaside city of Burgas which has gained popularity due to Sands Figures Festival and Spirit of Bourgas music festival was ranked among the top 30 access cities in the European Union. Bourgas is ranked among cities like Venice, Helsinki, Dublin and Luxemburg. The European Commission organizes the contest which takes place annually. The competition aims to focus residents’ attention on the European cities which work actively towards the improvement of areas for handicapped residents and also improve fundamental aspects of the urban lifestyle. According to the terms and conditions, the assessment is made on the basis of the integrated approach in 4 key areas: public premises and environment, information and communications, including new technologies, public facilities and services.
All cities in the EU with more than 50 000 citizens are allowed to participate in the competition. Bourgas is among the finalists, chosen among 114 cities in 23 countries. Bourgas is the only Bulgarian representative that is entitled to take part in the prestige competition. Eight finalists were chosen after the last selection. These are: Grenoble (France), Krakow (Poland), Ljubljuana (Slovenia), Marburg (Germany), Oomouc (Czech Republic), Salzburg (Austria), Santander and Terrassa (Spain). The winner will be announced on December 1st in Brussels (Belgium).
