Bulgaria Detracts Tourists from the Czech Republic and Cyprus

Standart Daily, 10.08.2005

The revenues from foreign holiday-makers have increased by 20% in Bulgaria The Bulgarian Black Sea resorts "have stolen" the tourists of the Czech Republic and Cyprus. The main groups of tourists, who so far preferred spending their holiday in the Czech Republic and Cyprus now come to Bulgaria. The Cyprian Mediterranean resorts have registered a decline of their tourists in the last two seasons. This is due to holiday competitors such as Bulgaria, Egypt and Turkey. This is what the head of the Cyprian Union of Hotel-Keepers, Zaharias Yoanidis, told the Filelefteros newspaper. The Cyprian tour-operators have managed to get back only 2% of the lost groups. The Czech Republic also suffered losses of tourists who prefer the Bulgarian Black Sea resorts to the cheap Czech beer in Prague, International Herald Tribune writes. Some 7.4 million foreign tourists visited the Czech Republic in 2004. But the Czech tourism faces challenges and the serious competition of the Bulgarian Black Sea resorts and the Croatian Adriatic resorts, the newspaper writes further. The data of the World Tourist Organization shows that Bulgaria and the Czech Republic have registered the highest growth in tourism. see source
