Bulgaria invests 10M in most important cultural landmarks in the country

Anita Valentinova, 18.02.2011

Bulgaria’s Finance Minister Simeon Dyankov announced yesterday that the cabinet will allot 10M BGN additional financing for 10 of Bulgaria’s most significant cultural landmarks. Three of the most important places are Perperikon, Sozopol and the popular beach resort Nessebur. The Thracian site Perperikon and Old Nessebar are positioned second and third. The funds allotted by the government will be invested in infrastructure projects and the proper promotion of Bulgaria’s cultural and historical treasures. The final proposals for their financing should have been completed by the end of March. Additionally, these holiday venues may receive a funding of 350 million EUR under EU funds. The project includes restoration and conservation of historic objects. Thus, the development of cultural and historic tourism will be further boosted. The coastal town of Sozopol tops the list of Bulgaria’s top 10 cultural and historical sites due to the relics of St John the Baptist discovered last year on St. Ivan Island.
