Bulgaria might turn out the best European place for SPA investment

Anita Valentinova, source : klassa.bg, 21.11.2009

A total of 8 billion EUR have been invested so far in the development of Spa hotels, according to official data, stated the Chairman of the Bulgarian Union on Balneotherapy and Spa Tourism, Stefan Sharlopov. He participated in the meeting of the Board of Directors of the European Spas Association in the town of Sandanski, which was held under the slogan "Bulgaria - four seasons of health, spa and wellness tourism.“ According to him, the amount of funds invested in this attractive type of tourism could turn out to be 50% less as the number of hotels which actually meet spa requirements is about 200. Unfortunately, Bulgaria has not yet adopted a strategy for the development of Spa tourism. Moreover, there are no established criteria which should be met by hotels. It is true that the number of Spa hotels is constantly growing, but it is not clear how many they are in total and whether they offer quality SPA services. A nearly 20% drop in tourism was registered, compared to last year, commented representatives from the tourism sector. Europe records 180 million spa night's lodgings per year, compared to around 110 million in the USA and 130 million in Japan, said Sigrun Lang, President of the European Spas Association.

Four Bulgarian SPA hotels have been certified in accordance with the European standards. The possibility for Bulgaria to become all-year SPA destination was the main topic during the annual meeting of the European SPA Association in Sandanski. It is important to stress that prices of SPA treatments have not been cut down, but the SPA business will attract potential clients by offering exclusive promo offers, including Free Overnight. It is expected that some hotels in Hissar will offer discounts of 15% or 30% in December. Hotel owners concluded that the financial crisis has not affected seriously SPA tourism in Bulgaria. A nearly 30% rise in the number of tourists was registered as revenues keep their levels from 2008, said the CEO of the 4-star SPA hotel Bor in Velingrad, the SPA capital of Balkans.
