Bulgaria’s famous Panagyurishte treasure to be replicated

Anita Valentinova, source : monitor.bg, 16.09.2009

A replica of the authentic Panagyurishte treasure will be created for celebrate the 60 years which have passed since the treasure’s discovery. The unique replica will be created especially to mark the 60 years passed since the antique dishes were discovered. The official celebrations with reference to the anniversary are scheduled for the 8th of December, the mayor of Panagyurishte said. The world famous Panagyurishte treasure was discovered on the 8th of December 1949 in Merul region near the town of Panagyurishte. Brothers Pavel, Mihail and Petko Deikovi found the ancient gold treasure consisting of nine artifacts with the total weight of 6.164 kg. The largest vessel is the amphora, which has a centaur-shaped handle. Three of the seven rhytons are shaped as animals' heads, one is the front part of a goat, three have women's (Amazon) heads. The set most probably served for the drinking of wine in a religious, celebratory or domestic atmosphere. There is also an opinion that its purpose was the ritual purification of a liquid, which could be wine. It is supposed that another two rhytons with the front part of animals, an amphora and one or two phials are missing, with a view of the sacral importance of the number three in the Thracian religion. The treasure belonged to a unknown ruler of the Thracian tribe Odrisi. It dates back to the end of 4th century and the beginning of the 3rd century BC.
